Chief Risk Officer, Wealth & Personal Banking MENAT

Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, financial crime and regulatory compliance, market and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth.
We are currently seeking an ambitious individual to join our Global Risk team, working together with colleagues to define, manage and achieve divisional business targets.
The Wealth and Personal Banking CRO is responsible and accountable for leading the Wealth and Personal Banking Risk function to identify, assess, monitor, mitigate and make timely and measured judgments on all current and potential future risks faced by the business (ensuring all legal and regulatory requirements are met), in order to protect the employees, assets and reputation of the Group, and to support shareholder value and profitability. Helping the business manage within the risk appetite is a critical responsibility for the role holder.
The role has direct accountability over financial risks and further aggregation and oversight responsibility for Risk associated with HSBC’s Wealth and Personal Banking operations in MENAT across all risk types –, encompassing the business units of Retail banking and wealth management. It has similar accountability for risks related to Asset management, Insurance and Private Banking. The role holder will also provide support to the Europe WPB Risk lead, acting as a single point of contact for the WPB EMEA CEO, The accountability of Europe will remain with Europe WPB Risk lead with escalations into the Global WPB CRO. This role will however consolidate the aggregated risk profile across Europe and MENAT for discussions with the EMEA Head of WPB and other stakeholders.
The role implements and maintains an integrated risk management framework with policies and controls for use and execution by the business lines in all regions, delivering globally effective and efficient risk processes.
In this role, you will:
Lead and direct the WPB Risk function, be a partner to the WPB business, supporting WPB growth aspirations whilst retaining the appropriate risk management discipline to achieve the WPB’s strategic goals.
• As a member of the Wealth and Personal Banking EXCO, lead the assessment and mitigation of key risks (financial and non-financial), and as a partner with the business, help ensure that new business and growth aspirations are supported by balanced decision making and are focused on long term sustainable outcomes
To lead, in conjunction with the Wealth and Personal Banking ExCo, the development of the Wealth and Personal Banking risk appetite
• To lead and deliver on Risk Analytics enabling desirable business outcomes
• Ensure that top risks are appropriately highlighted in the MENAT RMM, as well as EMEA WPB RMM, and that these risks are being appropriately managed. Guide Europe WPB Risk Lead on inputs to the Europe RMM
• Develop and ensure implementation of an adequate framework to identify emerging risk issues, and that mitigating strategies are implemented
• Ensure that adequate stress scenarios specific to Wealth and Personal Banking are considered to help understand downside risk sensitivities
• Ensure effective relationships with the MENAT regulators for WPB Risk related matters, act as a guide to the Europe WPB Risk Lead on reg matters where required
• Accountable for the oversight of the risk management framework to enhance, standardise and integrate the various risk activities & capabilities including the implementation of strategic projects and systems.
• Lead MENAT WPB Risk that is considered industry leading and fit for purpose underpinned by an appropriate governance infrastructure.
• Exercise active risk management for WPB Risk. Define guardrail credit performance parameters that are monitored in credit performance dashboards for the identification of early warning signals.
• Ensure effective management of IFRS9 implementation and compliance, model management (e.g. credit scorecards, BASEL and IFRS9 models), forecasting activities, and stress testing
• Provide effective oversight for AM, Insurance and Private Bank & Wealth Risk activities in MENAT.
• Effectively manage the control environment within the MENAT WPB Risk function.
• Maintain cost discipline and achieve efficiencies where appropriate for MENAT WPB Risk and supports wider cost initiatives in the Group
• Act in accordance with HSBC’s purpose and values, being cognisant of all applicable local legal, fiscal, regulatory and shareholder requirements as they relate to HSBC.
• Foster a strong risk and control culture, including ensuring adequate management focus and demonstrative “tone from the top”
• Champion a culture that prioritises the fair treatment of all customers, including particular attention
Requirements
To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree is essential to obtain a UAE visa
• Experience of working in a retail credit function at a senior level in the Middle East
• Detailed knowledge of Retail Banking at a strategic level
• Experience of managing teams with strong analytical skills, including regulatory and business models.
• Proven experience of positive, challenging interactions with Senior Executives across the Group.
• Resourceful, creative and inquisitive approach to dealing with high levels of complexity and ambiguity.
• Have an ability to understand, bring together and report on non financial risks
• Have a commercial mindset and balance risk and reward in decision making.
• Ability to self-start, setting own agenda.
• Able to operate effectively against uncertainty and on unfamiliar ground.
• Strategic thinker and pragmatic implementer able to develop efficient methods of bringing about change.
