Field Crop Specialist in the Center for Desert Agriculture- CDA, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia
Description
The Center for Desert Agriculture (CDA) in KAUST is seeking a motivated and articulate researcher to lead the design and establishment of a range of open-field plant growth facilities for research and teaching in plant science, agriculture and agronomy, in line with the CDA’s Strategic Plan. The field specialist will need to work independently with expert consultants to design and build several facilities, and coordinate their operation with other operations within the University, in particular the KAUST Core Labs.
Major responsibilities:
Coordinate with consultants and faculty, members of the CDA, Core Labs and other stakeholders for the design of field sites and associated facilities to meet current and anticipated research needs.
Plan with consultants for the construction of these facilities, organize tenders and oversee the work of contractors and others.
Implement and manage research experiments, including design of field experiments, development of work plans for field research, maintenance and service of research equipment, design and development of novel small plot research equipment and high-throughput phenotyping platforms.
Primary responsibility for hiring and supervising research assistants.
Perform other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of his/her position.
Required competencies:
An understanding of the needs of plants is essential, as is the ability to design, build and operate facilities for the growth of plants, in particular for scientific experimentation.
An ability to work in hot, humid and dry environments.
Fluent in written and spoken English; competence in Arabic is beneficial.
An ability to work with a diversity of people in a multi-cultural setting and have a strong commitment to promoting diversity in the workplace.
The CDA is embedded in the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) division (http://bese.kaust.edu.sa), which extends and supports a multi-disciplinary work environment. Extensive core laboratories (http://corelabs.kaust.edu.sa) at KAUST also provide access to the most recent equipment such as imaging, sequencing, and single-cell genomics.
The position is initially limited to 3 years but can be extended.

Inspector – Landscape- Parsons, Doha, Qatar
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Landscape Inspector will provide all necessary assistance to the construction supervision team with respect to all landscape issues and progress of the works. The incumbent will be responsible for the daily inspection and approval of the work items submitted by the contractor and he will monitor the work progress during the construction. He will participate and coordinate with the contractor to ensure timely inspections and monitor all aspects of the landscape works in progress.
Check site conditions for suitability prior to construction
Observe, check and record works execution is in accordance with approved methods
Check instructions are being carried out
Record inspections, tests, work executed etc.
Check material delivered are as approved and properly stored
Observe site safety procedures
Measure work done when required
Assist in the review of shop drawings
Assist in the review and preparation of ‘As-Built’ drawings
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
BSc/BEng degree or Diploma in Agriculture/ Horticulture/ Civil Engineering or Landscape Architecture. Registration as professional engineer preferable.
At least 10 years of overall experience, minimum of 2 years in GCC, and 3 years in similar role on Landscape Projects/High Rise Buildings (at least 20 stories).
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of current Civil Engineering Technology and its effective use on the project. Construction of large civil/structural and/or industrial projects.
Experience in Inspections of work and Review of contractors' shop drawings.
Experience in Microsoft Applications. Familiar with project management tools and/or software.

Summary
The Director/Sr Director of Research and Development (R&D), located in Abu Dhabi-UAE, will be responsible for all aspects of Research and Development in our new state of the art R&D facility, AeroFarms AgX. Reporting to the General Manager and the VP of R&D they will provide scientific direction and leadership for the company’s global R&D organization.
Responsibilities
Partner with the General Manager and the VP of R&D to deliver the overall strategic plan for AeroFarms AgX
Build a fully functioning local R&D organization
Lead, manage and develop a diverse team of scientists, growers, molecular biologists, and chemists
In partnership with the General Manager, develop and manage the R&D operating budget for the facility
Provide oversight and scientific leadership to the R&D project portfolio from experimental design through execution
In partnership with the Business Development team, engage external technical stakeholders and communicate with global partners regarding current and future R&D projects and capabilities
Contribute to patent applications and patent strategy development for AeroFarms
Work collaboratively with other global departments such as Engineering, IT and Operations
Ensure that projects remain on schedule, are delivered with high quality, great customer satisfaction and achievement of target goals
Qualifications & Experience **
A PhD in Plant Physiology/Eco-physiology, Horticulture, Plant Science, or an MS and equivalent experience
Minimum 10 years of industry experience in a scientific leadership position in controlled environment agriculture
Highly developed leadership, people management and communication skills
A proven track record of leading multidisciplinary research teams
Experience leading engagements with external stakeholders including research and commercial partners, government agencies, and investors
Experience developing and administering department and project budgets
Experience growing specialty crops; leafy greens and herbs experience preferred.
Strong background in characterizing plant physiological processes and agronomic/ horticultural traits including plant yield and quality in response to abiotic stress
Experience with characterization of plants, including imaging, phenotyping, chemical analysis, and/or objective measurements of taste and texture
Strong aptitude with experimental design and statistical analysis
Previous experience in the GCC region is a plus
Important Considerations:
** This position requires a complete residency in Abu Dhabi, UAE
** This position must be accessible during some US work hours for reporting and coordinating
