This role encompasses compliance, advisory, planning and risk management work streams related to indirect taxes in all the countries in MENAT where HSBC has a presence and providing appropriate support to the Regional Head of Tax and regional tax colleagues on key strategic and regulatory matters related to indirect taxes in the region.

The role holder will be the Region’s VAT specialist with respect to each business line, sharing best practice and representing pro-actively the HSBC Group’s interests with Regulators, Government Agencies and Tax Authorities.

A key focus of this role is to develop and execute a VAT strategy in relation to each relevant business line for VAT implementation in the remaining GCC countries.

The role holder will be responsible for adhering to the Group’s Risk Management Framework in relation to VAT and take responsibility for associated assurance in the business lines.

The role holder will also support the Regional Head of Tax and regional tax colleagues in other areas of tax as and when required.

In this role, you will:

  • Proactively support the lines of business on all VAT matters.
  • Communicate and implement VAT strategy for the line of business. Engage effectively with key stakeholders, driving change at pace.
  • Drive implementation of VAT compliance process transformation in collaboration with external compliance services provider.
  • Lead the cross-collaboration with key stakeholders globally for VAT.
  • Proactively identify and resolve VAT issues within the business line and support the Regional Head of Tax on wider issues affecting multiple business lines.
  • Continually reassess the VAT risks and opportunities inherent in the business line, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices and management restructurings.
  • Attend industry body meetings, with the Regional Head of Tax where necessary or appropriate, and manage issues with such bodies with impact to HSBC’s lines of business.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of processes and controls over indirect tax

The role requires the direct provision of tax advice through interpretation of the ever changing and fast moving Tax legislation and statutory requirements and is not one that merely co-ordinates the provision of external advice.

The Tax-operating environment has significantly changed and there is an increasing awareness that tax risk management and good internal controls are key.  The role therefore requires a very detailed technical knowledge of VAT and its practical implementation to provide support for lines of business. The successful management of VAT also requires an exceptionally clear understanding of customer and business needs and expectations. 

 The role holder is required to be forward thinking and innovative without compromising compliance with tax regulations. The job holder should have necessary skills to analyse data and review/ maintain ERP systems and to drive process transformation. It is essential that the individual is able to network and build relationships and have the ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders – both internal and external. Strong writing and communication skills are essential.

  • The role holder will also adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators.The role holder will implement the Group compliance policy, managing compliance risk in liaison with Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply.
  • This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators.
Requirements

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • University degree is mandatory .
  • Direct and indirect tax compliance experience consisting of:
    • VAT compliance including the preparation of VAT returns – preferred GCC experience.
    • Knowledge in GCC VAT law to assist with advisory work.
    • Direct tax knowledge with respect to corporate income tax returns filing is a plus.
  • Strong understanding in accounting and financial reporting.
  • Good technical skills in terms of systems/tools/technology and proficiency is in Microsoft office.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), influencing and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in data analytics projects/reconciliations.
  • Problem solving oriented
  • An understanding of the potential for technology to be deployed into indirect tax processes, with practical implementation experience preferred
