Product Quality is table stake in managing a hydrocarbon supply chain. This vacancy in the East regional Product Quality Team is focusing on supporting the Global Trading in all kinds of product quality and product technical matters. Global Trading integrates a global portfolio of crude oil, refined products, natural gas electrical power and chemicals around the globe from various offices.
This position is intended to sustain the capability of the East T&S PQ team to support our Trading (SITME) and Commercial Fuels business based in the UAE. The successful candidate for this position will work closely together with the other PQ Excellence Leads and Fuels Technical Advisors in the regional PQ team, as well with the Traders and Commercial operations.
Specifically, as part of East PQ & Claims team, lead the implementation of technical product management within Trading in line with globally consistent standards. Provide Product Quality (PQ) technical support during PQ incidents (PQI); mitigation; investigation; incident report and follow up, including associated learning and recovery against cargo claims. Support Trading engagement with regulators on interpretation of existing and development of new product regulations. Work with Downstream Fuels Technical Managers to deliver PQ enterprise first behaviours across the Trading interface. Furthermore, act as the first point of contact in SITME for any potential claims related issues.
What’s the role?
To provide product quality technical support to Trading for the purpose of maintaining consistent product quality standards compliant with commercial, statutory, and regulatory requirements. At all times through the Quality Assurance activity drive to minimise profit leakage from PQI and maximise value contribution to Trading P&L. Drive HSSE mindset in GIC companies by building shared vision & delivering through others.
In addition, this role would require 20% of time providing fuels technical support to Commercial Fuels, which includes fuels application trials, fuels training for resellers and support other marketing initiatives.
Accountabilities:
Provide expert advice and support to the Global Trading desks on matters of cargo quality, blending and additives.
Lead the implementation of technical standards within Trading product management policies, processes, and standards.
Represent Trading within the Supply Product Quality and Shell Fuels Product Management network, in the formulation of product quality policy and process across the Supply Chain.
Strong HSSE hands-on experience driving Goal Zero mindset within the GIC Inspection companies.
Provide timely briefs to Commercial Operations and Trading managers on key product quality issues in support of Enterprise First decision-making.
Provide expert advice to Trading on the technical and commercial implications of current and emerging regulations.
Provide coaching and training on product quality issues to Trading Operators as required.
Provide technical support during PQ incidents, causation theory, mitigation, investigation, and incident report and follow up including recovery against cargo claims.
Support the Claims and Legal departments in the management of quality claims.
Contribute to specific technical product management projects on behalf of Trading.
Active support for the Product Quality Incident Reporting within Trading.
Provide technical advice and support regarding inspection and quality assurance of laboratory services.
Responsible for carrying out Inspection Audits, as applicable, across the Middle East geographical area.
As directed, represent Shell interests in external organisations in relation to Quality Assurance matters.
On a need basis, provide technical support to Commercial Fuels business, acting as fuels technical advisor to B2B customers. This includes and not restricting to fuels technical trainings, fuels application trials, supporting marketing initiatives, etc.
Special Challenges:
To pro-actively work with the trading teams, the Global Products Claims team members and other concerned parties to promote a Quality Assurance process, with the aim to help minimise/avoid quality claims throughout the supply chain. To actively work with traders to optimise quality profitability by advising on blending/doping possibilities to improve base load quality specification.
Working remotely from line manager, the incumbent will need to be able to independently prioritise and manage their time and tasks to deliver an effective, professional QA service to the Trading desks.
In addition, you would spend 20% of time providing technical support to Commercial Fuels B2B customers, promoting quality assurance as a CVP in addition to benefits of differentiated fuels.
Able to attend to urgent product quality incidents queries during out of office hours on special circumstances.
What we need from you

The candidate will have solid knowledge of Petroleum Quality, Analytical techniques, Testing Methods, Bulk Cargo Sampling Procedures as well as being familiar with general Cargo Inspection. Furthermore, strong hands-on HSSE knowledge as well as HSSE control framework, should be able to conduct Business Performance Reviews (BPRs) with the GIC Inspection companies to drive the Goal Zero through building shared vision & driving the right mindset through delivering through others.
The candidate will ideally be a qualified Chemist/Engineer, experience of working in a laboratory will be an advantage or hands on experience of running a terminal. Ideally person may have work experience of an Oil Inspection company for a number of years or dealing with Inspection companies.
The candidate will have experience of Bulk Cargo Sampling procedures gained through working some time in the field.
The candidate should be either qualified to HNC/HND or preferably to BSc level in Chemistry or equivalent.
The candidate will have experience of auditing and preferably should hold an industry recognised audit qualification. Full hands-on experience of LOD 1 & 2.
The candidate shall have a demonstrable commercial acumen in a business environment and possess strong leadership skills.
An awareness of the risk involved in physical oil trading and shipping operations would be advantageous, as would a basic understanding of Incoterms.
Knowledge of diesel fuel application for on-road and off-road would be advantageous.
Good IT, communication, stakeholders management and negotiation skills are essential.
