Ventures Director, NEOM, KSA

 Summary

 

Investing in and implementing digital innovations across the energy value chain is critical for NEOM Energy to achieve its vision to create a first-of-its-kind, 100% renewable, and carbon free energy system.

 

NEOM Energy & Water (E&W) is looking for an experienced candidate to play a leading role in developing the firm’s global venture investment and partnership activities. Ventures Director will be integral to developing and implementing NEOM Energy’s strategic innovation activities. The position is based in NEOM, Saudi Arabia.

 

The ideal candidate should be a natural relationship builder with extensive experience in dealmaking and a broad network in the technology industry, plus an interest in the renewable energy sector. The candidate should be experienced in sourcing, qualifying, and investing in various technology-related companies. Professional experience at a fast growth technology company is preferred - experience in the energy industry is preferred, but not necessary.

 

 

 

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and execute venture strategy in line with NEOM Energy’s vision, structure the business set-up, and position NEOM for global market entry
  • Support the stand-up of global venture operations and collaborate closely with regional teams
  • Develop NEOM Energy’s investment and partnership platform through the hiring, training, and mentoring of investment, business development, and portfolio operations personnel
  • Establish and maintain deep networks in the technology start-up and venture capital communities, energy industry, innovation centres, and academia
  • Contribute to thought leadership/content and represent the firm at industry events and speaking engagements
  • Lead all aspects of the investment/partnership process, including opportunity sourcing, financial modeling, due diligence, negotiation, committee presentations, and post-transaction management for new and follow-on investments
  • Build a portfolio of investments/partnerships that meet financial and strategic objectives
  • Participate as deal leader and board appointee for complex and high-profile investments/partnerships
  • Identify and structure operational synergy opportunities between NEOM and startups
  • Maintain and oversee relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that operational synergies and innovation opportunities get realized
  • Provide value-add to NEOM and portfolio via strategic and operational guidance, networking, fundraising, and business development support
  • Provide visibility and objective reporting of portfolio performance to management
  • Stay up to date on communication with the HQ team for internal and external processes
  • Communicate broadly with internal and external stakeholders to increase engagement
  • Be a brand ambassador for the NEOM Energy ventures team and enhance the team’s visibility and reputation within the technology start-up ecosystem

 

 

 

Education & Experience

 

  • Undergraduate degree: MBA and/or advanced technical degree preferred

 

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience, including previous direct investing experience in a relevant discipline, or relevant transaction advisory or consulting experience gained in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or strategy consulting

 

  • Entrepreneurial leadership background, especially for a high-growth or multi-stage technology company, highly preferred

 

  • Strong conceptual capacity to develop a vision for NEOM's energy system

 

  • Experience in identifying, structuring, and realizing company-to-company partnerships and operational synergies

 

  • Proven investing, value-add, and exit track record

 

  • Driven self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively

 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cross-functionally across the portfolio and various operational groups

 

  • Ability to quickly build trust with other team members as well as entrepreneurs and broader finance/capital/strategic networks

 

  • Highly collaborative, with experience in C-level and executive stakeholder management

 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience presenting at the most senior levels of an organization

 

  • Available to travel internationally
