 Elementary School Librarian- The American School of Dubai, UAE


The Elementary School Librarian is an integral member of the faculty who will work to provide
subject matter expertise to the students’ instructional program in the area of information literacy.
He/she is a passionate elementary school educator with an ability to develop, implement and
maintain systems that encourage patrons to utilize literacy and inquiry skills in a positive
environment. The Elementary School Librarian will support and implement the vision of ASD
through advocating and building effective library and information services and programs that
contribute to the development of lifelong learners and will create strong connections between the
library, classroom programs, the curriculum and the community.
Instructional Responsibilities:
● Have a passion for Elementary School education
● Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and prepare effective instruction within the
library throughout the year
● Ensure that literacy and inquiry skills are integrated into the curriculum in partnership with
classroom teachers
● Provide and manage a library space that is conducive to learning and supports a
student-centered learning environment
● Effectively apply updated and research-based strategies to address the needs of diverse
learners in a culture of transition and mobility
● Actively support student’s social emotional learning and well-being by contributing and
participating in appropriate activities and programs after school and during the school day
such as:
o advising
o organizing field trips
● Engage with students in meaningful activities beyond the classroom which extend
learning experiences and meet the needs of students
● Collaborate with teachers to support the subject-area curricula
● Model and promote the use of databases, online resources, LibGuides, etc., to support
and inform the curriculum in the library and the classroom
Information Literacy Specialist Responsibilities:
● Collaborate with the library team for program planning, budgeting, and other operational
activities as required
● Ensure student and staff have appropriate access to print, non-print and media
equipment and resources
● Support and lead the process to implement, promote, evaluate, and budget for
instructional technologies and/or electronic resources
● Develop, revise and maintain efficient databases and online educational resources that
are age appropriate for ES students
● Assist staff and students in locating and using resources to support instruction and
learning
● Support and lead the process to develop and implement assessment and evaluation of
information and instructional technologies
● Represent the library in school meetings and on committees as appropriate and as
requested to ensure that information is communicated and incorporated in planning and
decision making
● Develop learning opportunities for the staff, parents, and administration on library policies
such as the freedom to read, student choice, and finding resources both print and digital
Schoolwide Responsibilities:
● Think systematically, reflect on, and learn from practice and be willing to collaborate with
others to learn as a professional
● Engage with the administration in a committed effort to continue to grow as an educator
● Openly support and abide by all school policies and procedures
● Model ASD ‘Core Values’ in interactions with the school community
● Represent the skills and attitudes of global citizenship, antiracism and intercultural
sensitivity and proactivity
● Take on other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
Required Qualifications:
● Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized and accredited university
● Degree, certificate, or license in school librarianship
● A minimum of two years, current, full-time school-based experience with demonstrated
expertise in subject matter
Preferred Qualifications:
● Experience working in an international/overseas school setting
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
● Experience with Follett Destiny and Libguides or other library cataloging and curation
platforms
● Participation in current and relevant professional growth activities
● Demonstrate focused instruction and assessment of student learning
● Be open-minded, eager and willing to collaborate in a team environment in order to plan
and prepare for effective instruction
● Demonstrate commitment to personal continuous professional growth and development
● Develop and maintain effective working relationships
● Represent ASD with students, parents, colleagues, and broader school community in a
professional manner
