Teacher of English- British Council, Muscat, Oman
Role Purpose
To plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language classes, including development of materials, taking account of individual learning styles and ensuring a welcoming, professional learning environment. Any staff without DELTA-level qualifications will be aspiring to deliver at that level and will be working towards that aim, supported by the management team and teaching colleagues.
To carry out core administrative tasks to assist the project in reaching its customer satisfaction targets and in functioning efficiently and smoothly.
To engage in continued professional development in order to keep up-to-date with developments in the field and to facilitate consistent provision of high-quality teaching.
Main Accountabilities
Planning, preparing and delivering high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different student groups taking into account individual learning styles. Development of culturally appropriate materials, enhancing the reputation of the British Council as an authority in the field.
Monitoring student progress through appropriate diagnostic testing early on in courses and continuous assessment tasks. Counselling students appropriately at mid and end points of term and encouraging them to take a strategic, autonomous view of learning appropriate to their level.
Contributing to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services.
Ensuring teaching meets the standards expected in Teaching and Learning Reviews, the annual Academic Quality Plans and organisational expectations.
Using technology during lessons when required.
Finishing administrative tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
Contributing to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of the contemporary UK.
Maintaining good relationships with customers and colleagues
Actively engaging in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices.
Teaching in an energetic and engaging way, and in high standard. Teachers in the centre support each other and receive coaching in order to meet standards in the core areas of:
Clear aims and lesson staging
Appropriately varied classroom interaction patterns
Appropriate pacing
Integrated pronunciation
Error correction and feedback
Continuity of content
Supporting local marketing and promotional strategy and assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service.
Ensuring safeguarding and other guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
Job Overview
Working autonomously with little support, the teacher will be expected to deliver teaching that is compelling, effective and relevant to the needs of their students and their learning context. In doing so, teachers support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission in Oman. The teacher will be based in Duqm and will teach on a CSR project for OQ delivering English language courses and teacher training sessions. The post provides an opportunity for the teacher to add range and depth to their teaching experience and, in particular to gain experience of teaching teenagers in an Arabic speaking context.
Applicants must have a CELTA or Trinity Certificate qualification plus at least two years’ post qualification experience of teaching English to adults and young learners.
The teacher will need to be able to drive and will be provided with a 4x4 car whilst they are working in Duqm. Please note: Only those candidates with a valid Omani driving license will be considered for this post as the post holder will need to commute by car between different teaching centres in Al Wusta region. Candidates who possess driving licenses from any of the following countries are also eligible to apply as they can obtain an Omani driving license based on their existing license.

A minimum of 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults.
You should have recent experience in teaching of the following age groups related to the project:
Young learners aged 8 to 12 (600+ hours)
Young learners aged 13 to 17 (600+hours)
Adults aged 18+ (600+ hours)
